Number of Oil Wells Falls to 49-Year Low: The number of oil and natural gas wells drilled in the United States last year fell to its lowest level in nearly half a century, the American Petroleum Institute said. API said 8,103 oil wells, 7,145 gas wells and 6,509 dry holes were completed in 1992--a total of 21,757, the fewest since 19,431 were finished in 1943. Last year’s U.S. well completions were down 25% from 1991.
