Four people were killed when their car crashed into a disabled vehicle in the car-pool lane of the Redondo Beach Freeway in Compton, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
The accident, which occurred near the Central Avenue off-ramp shortly before midnight Saturday, claimed the lives of Jose Arteaga, 36, his wife Morina Sanchez, 35, their 4-year-old son and a 9-year-old niece.
Investigators said Arteaga’s 1991 Toyota was rounding a curve at a high rate of speed when it hit a disabled Thunderbird that had spun out of control and was left unattended, facing the wrong direction with its lights out. The 17-year-old driver of the Thunderbird was calling for help.
Authorities said that none of the people in the Toyota wore seat belts. The 4-year-old was in his mother’s lap.
