NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Devil His Due Wins Gulfstream Handicap

Devil His Due, ridden by Herb McCauley, surged at the top of the stretch to win the $500,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap at Gulfstream Park.
The 4-year-old colt finished a length in front of Offbeat, a 29-1 shot who came from last at the quarter pole to edge Pistols And Roses by a head for second. Missionary Ridge, who set the early pace, finished another length back in fourth.
Devil His Due ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01 1/5 and paid $25.80, $13.80 and $8. Offbeat paid $18.20 and $8; Pistols And Roses returned $5.40. Irish Swap, the 2-1 favorite, took the lead turning for home, but faded to fifth.
The Gulfstream Handicap was the second event in the nine-race American Championship Racing Series that started at Gulfstream with the Donn Handicap Feb. 20. Pistols And Roses, who won the Donn, leads the point standings with 15. Devil His Due, fifth in the Donn, has 11.
Latin American, a 23-1 shot, took command at the top of the stretch to win the $150,000 New Orleans Handicap at the Fair Grounds.
The 5-year-old horse, ridden by Garrett Gomez, overtook Delafield, who led for the first half mile in the Grade III race.
Latin American was clear at the eighth pole and unchallenged the rest of the way, running the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 1/5, two-fifths of a second off the track record.
Latin American paid $48.60, $21.00 and $10.20. Delafield, ridden by Pat Day, returned $5.40 and $3.60. West By West, the 3-2 favorite, paid $3.00.
