Dean Among 3 Area Basketball Players Honored

State scoring leader Michael Dean of Torrance High is among three South Bay players named to the All-Southern Section Division II basketball team by the Amateur Athletic Foundation-First Interstate Bank board of athletics.
Dean, a 6-foot senior bound for Azusa Pacific University, was named to the 16-player first team. He averaged 33.6 points a game, including 47 in Torrance’s first-round Division II-AA playoff victory over Burroughs of Burbank, 83-70.
Guards Sam Turks of Inglewood and Shane Willis of Mira Costa--two of the area’s top juniors--were named to the second team. Turks, the Bay League most valuable player, averaged 13.7 points for the league champions. Willis led Mira Costa with a 17.9 scoring average.
Forward Charles O’Bannon of State Division II champion Artesia and point guard Jacque Vaughn of Southern Section Division II-A champion Muir were named co-players of the year.
