Volunteers Help Clean L.A. River

Friends of the Los Angeles River and more than two dozen other groups and corporations Saturday sponsored the “Great Los Angeles River Cleanup” at six locations, including sites in Sepulveda Basin and near Griffith Park.
More than 1,000 volunteers helped collect litter and debris, said Denis Schure, a spokesman for Friends of the Los Angeles River.
In Sepulveda Basin, 100 volunteers removed everything from plastic grocery bags to Christmas tree ornaments. The group filled a small truck with shopping carts retrieved from the banks and river bottom, he said.
The other cleanup sites were Los Feliz Bridge, Elysian Valley, Compton Creek and Willow Street in Long Beach.
“I’m real satisfied,” Schure said. “It felt like the best we’ve done in the three years we’ve had this. It really makes a contribution to the community.”
Among the other sponsors were the California Conservation Corps, Los Angeles Conservation Corps, TreePeople, Southern California Gas Co., Seven-up Royal Crown Bottling Co., Heal the Bay and high schools and churches from Long Beach to San Fernando.
