April Orders Flat for Durable Goods: New orders for durable goods such as cars and machinery were flat in April, the Commerce Department said, a sign that the economy is not bouncing back from a dismal March. In another negative sign, the government reported that order backlogs fell to their lowest level in 4 1/2 years, indicating that demand for manufactured products is weak.
