The San Fernando and Pacoima Alcohol Coalitions have announced a contest in which students from the northeast San Fernando Valley will be asked to design billboards discouraging alcohol abuse.
Coalition members said they will push to have the student artwork placed on billboards along heavily traveled thoroughfares in San Fernando, Pacoima, Sylmar and Sun Valley.
“We will listen to our children via these pictures,” said Augie Maldonado, a San Fernando coalition member.
Members of the coalitions met Thursday to finalize details of the contest, which will start in October and end in November. The contest is open to elementary, middle and high school and Mission College students. The winners from each of the four categories will receive $400 and their teachers will receive a $100 gift certificate. The contest’s theme is “Alcohol Is a Drug Too.”
The coalitions are made up of representatives of several educational and social service organizations, including San Fernando Valley Partnership and the Pacoima Coordinating Council.
The use of five billboards for three months was donated by Gannett Outdoor Co. and Patrick Media Group.
Eric Rose, a spokesman for Patrick, said use of the billboards is part of its ongoing public service program to donate space to nonprofit organizations.
