South Pasadena : Opposition to Plan for Inn

A group of residents is hoping to scuttle plans for a bed and breakfast inn along the fashionable “Millionaires’ Row” section of Orange Grove Boulevard.

The residents, led by Margaret Rice, are fighting an inn proposed for Bissell House, a modified Victorian home built in 1887 at 201 Orange Grove Blvd., and named for the daughter of the vacuum-cleaner magnate.

The Planning Commission approved the project, but Rice brought an appeal of this decision to the City Council. The council will consider the appeal Aug 4.

Opponents of the proposed inn contend they do not want a business in a neighborhood of single-family homes dating to the 1800s.

A victory for the group would end the dream of Russell and Lenore Butcher, who bought the house to turn it into a bed and breakfast establishment.
