Eleven people who work in the engineering department at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Los Angeles and one retiree came forward Thursday to claim a $16.46-million Super Lotto jackpot.
Each of the 12 will receive $68,583, before taxes, for the next 20 years for holding the winning $5 Quick Pick ticket, California State Lottery officials said.
At a news conference Thursday afternoon at the lottery’s Van Nuys office, Ben Crockett, the hospital’s acting chief engineer, told of receiving a telephone call about the win.
Crockett, who supervises many of the group members, said he had told a real estate agent the day before that he was “just waiting to win the lottery” before he bought a house.
The winners, who range in age from 30 to 60, had a variety of plans for spending their winnings, including going back to college, buying homes, helping their children and grandchildren and traveling.
