Gene Stus, who won at Cal Bowl in 1991 and ‘92, took the first-round lead in the $100,000 Pacific PBA Senior Open in Lakewood on Monday.
“I can’t believe my carry on the corner pins here at Cal Bowl,” said Stus, who has had two heart bypass operations. “I’m making good lane and ball adjustments at the right time. . . . It must be that my game is made for Cal Bowl’s lane conditions.”
Stus, of Allen Park, Mich., averaged 230.83 for six games and was 25 pins in front of Don Gilman of Oregon City, Ore. Last year, Stus defeated Gilman, 300-188, on national TV to earn $110,000 and launch his senior-player-of-the-year campaign.
David Tuell Jr. of Tacoma, Wash., who sponsored Earl Anthony when he joined the pro tour in the 1970s, was third, followed by Mel Wolf of Jackson, Mich.
ESPN will televise the Thursday night finals.
