Woodbridge Passes Test, Beats Pacifica : Football: Quarterback Sauk takes to the air for a pair of touchdown passes as Warriors open with a 31-7 victory.

IRVINE — Senior Gary Young caught two touchdown passes to lead Woodbridge to a 31-7 nonleague victory over Pacifica Friday night at Irvine High School.
Senior quarterback Matt Sauk completed eight of 15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns for Woodbridge (1-0). Young had three catches for 147 yards.
Sauk threw 49 yards to Young for a touchdown with 7 minutes 18 seconds left in the second quarter to give Woodbridge a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors took a 14-0 lead with 2:01 left in the second quarter when Sauk threw to Young again.
On second down and five at the Woodbridge 13-yard line, Sauk hit Young at the Warrior 40, and Young sprinted past two defenders and raced in for a 87-yard touchdown.
Pacifica cut it to 14-7 when Tommy Summers scored on an 18-yard run with 8:35 left in the second quarter.
But Woodbridge scored again when Rich Rommelfanger ran 44 yards for a touchdown with 5:55 left in the third quarter, giving the Warriors a 21-7 lead.
Nathan Bennett kicked a 47-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the third quarter to put Woodbridge ahead, 24-7.
With the ball on the Mariners’ 25, a high snap over Pacifica kicker Jeff De Pippo’s head resulted in a Woodbridge fumble recovery on Pacifica’s five.
Two plays later, Billy Atkinson’s four-yard touchdown run gave Woodbridge a 31-7 lead.
