Village Christian 21, Kern Valley 13--Village Christian running back Jake Funk carried 24 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns and Kern Valley was called for 105 penalty yards at Kennedy High.
Kern Valley quarterback Miah Thompson aided the Crusaders’ cause by throwing three interceptions. Village Christian quarterback Mike Spielman completed five of 11 passes for 84 yards, including a 21-yard scoring pass to Tony Yousif, which broke a 7-7 tie midway through the third quarter.
Funk, whose six-yard scoring run in the first quarter gave Village Christian a 7-0 lead, added a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to increase the margin to 21-7.
However, Kern Valley’s James Fugitt returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to close the margin to 21-13. The Broncs marched to the Crusader 26-yard line with two minutes to play but Village Christian defensive back Clint Borden intercepted a pass at the 15-yard line.
