LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

For many of us in the heart of this agricultural community, the fields around us are a mystery.

We know somebody is growing something, but it’s not always easy to spot what it is--especially at freeway speeds. Strawberries? Carrots? Peppers?

And what is that tractor doing? What are they spraying? Are they planting or harvesting or something in between?

Our interest isn’t just a matter of idle curiosity. The local crop was worth more than $700 million in 1992--and that was an off year. Besides, as farmers remind us, we all like to eat.

So, starting on Sunday, The Times will take its readers on a one-year farm expedition. At key points during the next 12 months, staff writer Stephanie Simon will chronicle one Ventura County field and the people who are gambling on its success.

From the high-tech methods that have turned the new Conejo Ranch from brush to farmland, from planting to cultivating to harvesting, we will see what it takes to put food on the table.

Be sure to look for “60 Acres of Hope.” I think you will find it fascinating reading.
