Washington Wins a Wild One : Generals Win a Wild One : Crenshaw complains about out-of-bounds tackle. Officials decide it’s their protest that’s out of bounds.

There weren’t many points scored, but there was plenty of action Friday afternoon in Washington High’s game against Crenshaw.
Washington’s 8-6 Southern Pacific League home win featured some of the wildest plays of the year:
* a quarterback scramble that turned into a 75-yard run,
* a 52-yard touchdown run,
* a three-yard touchdown run as the clock expired,
* a pass that was batted twice before being caught, fumbled, recovered by the defense and then awarded to the offense after the receiver was ruled down.
But the most crucial play of the day came in the fourth quarter, when coaches complained that Crenshaw tight end Adrian Anderson had been tackled out of bounds. The Generals were not penalized on the play, and Crenshaw’s complaints drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
“I am dissatisfied when the referee doesn’t make a call when a kid is hit out of bounds,” Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said.
“Then (the referee) penalizes us for making him aware of the fact. In a close game like that, you have to let the kids decide it.”
The penalty could not have come at a worse time for the Cougars, who were attempting to mount a drive from their own 23-yard line, down 8-6 with 2:30 left. Four plays later, Crenshaw turned the ball over on downs.
In the first half, Crenshaw punted the ball on each of its five possessions.
Washington also had trouble moving the ball, punting on three of its first four possessions.
Washington quarterback Amar Brisco provided the only offense of the first half when he broke free on a quarterback keeper and ran 75 yards before being brought down at the Crenshaw three-yard line.
“My line opened a lot of holes, especially on that run,” said Brisco, who passed for only 49 yards in the game but rushed for 98 yards in four carries. “I wanted to pass but I had to take what was open.”
The Generals almost failed to get off the play before the half ended as the clock ticked down to two seconds before running back Garrick Garrett scored on the three-yard run.
Trailing 8-0, Crenshaw’s Farrel Payton, who rushed for 112 yards in 15 carries, scored his team’s only touchdown on a 52-yard run up the middle. The Cougars failed to score on its two-point conversion attempt.
Records: Washington 4-3; Crenshaw 2-5
Next week: Crenshaw vs. San Pedro at Daniels Field; Washington at Narbonne.
