On Fregosi’s managerial award, bench coach John Vukovich said one thing stood out.
“The more success we had as a team, the further he went into the background, and I don’t think many people would do that,” Vukovich said.
“People don’t pay much attention to this, but in spring training he handled our pitching differently than anyone I’ve ever seen.
“He kept them on schedule, but he kept their innings down early. As a result, none of them went through the dead-arm stage in spring training, which is the reason we got out of the chute the way we did. Let’s face it, that was the reason we won (the division title).”
