400 Helicopter Workers Face Layoff: McDonnell Douglas Corp.’s helicopter plant in Culver City will end production by June, and only 50 to 100 of the plant’s 500 workers will be offered transfers to the helicopter division’s headquarters in Mesa, Ariz., a spokesman said. More than 3,000 people worked at the plant in the mid-1980s, but its employment has steadily fallen due to defense cuts and McDonnell’s previously announced plans to shift the plant’s workload to Mesa. The plant is the former home of Hughes Helicopters, which McDonnell Douglas bought in 1984.
