Man Sought in Attacks Killing 2, Wounding 1

SANTA ANA — An Upland man was at large late Monday night after killing a woman and a business partner in San Bernardino County and critically wounding another partner in a Santa Ana parking structure, police said.

The Santa Ana shooting occurred just before noon in the 1500 block of North Tustin Avenue. Police said John S. Hanna, 56, shot Greg Lawyer, 51, twice in the upper body. Lawyer was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was reported in critical but stable condition Monday night.

The shooting occurred outside Lawyer’s office at North Canadian Marketing, a subsidiary of the Calgary-based North Canadian Resources, which builds electrical power stations.

Lawyer and Hanna had been partners in another venture called North American Cogeneration. The corporation was suspended in 1991 on the recommendation of the state Franchise Tax Board.

Witnesses told police that Hanna came to North Canadian’s suite and asked for Lawyer. The men walked to a parking structure, where the sound of loud voices was followed by several shots.

Lawyer gave police the names of several other partners in the venture who might be in danger.

Police in Upland went to Hanna’s home, where a woman’s body was discovered. She had been shot. Police would not say whether the victim was Hanna’s wife.

Police tried unsuccessfully to reach another partner, Herbert Roy Ratch, 54. Ratch’s wife told police she had dropped him off Monday morning for a meeting with Hanna in Corona.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s investigators in Chino Hills found Ratch’s body just after noon in a grain storage lot.

Another business associate, Bernard F. Kolanowski, told authorities that he had heard a shot outside his Carlsbad home about 2 p.m. He said he saw Hanna walk past his window. He called police and hid, authorities said.
