Doubles Sweep Lifts UC Irvine Past Arizona in Men’s Tennis

The UC Irvine men’s tennis team, ranked 25th in the nation, swept three doubles matches to gain one team point and defeat Arizona, 4-3, in a nonconference match Wednesday at the UCI Tennis Stadium.
Julian Foxon, Luke Fitzsimons and Carlos Bustos each won in singles as UCI gained a split of six matches. Foxon and Fitzsimons remain unbeaten in singles. The Anteaters are 3-1; the Wildcats, ranked 37th, are 1-1.
Freshman Marc-Andre Tardif, who teamed with Bustos to win at No. 2 doubles, was bothered by a shoulder injury suffered in New Mexico last weekend and did not play singles. Tardif is ranked 47th nationally in singles.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
Southern California College 8, Biola 1--Wendy Andel won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and teamed with Jocalyn Jesperson to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-3 for SCC, which improved to 2-2. Biola dropped to 1-2.
In nonconference baseball:
UC Riverside 3, Southern California College 2 (10)--Brett O’Dea hit two home runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th inning for UC Riverside.
SCC’s Jeff Beckley took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before O’Dea tied the score, 1-1, with his first home run. SCC and Riverside each scored in the seventh inning.
Jason Brissey (0-1), who relieved Beckley in the eighth, took the loss for the Vanguards (0-3).
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
Hawaii 79, UC Irvine 52--UC Irvine (2-18, 1-11) fell behind, 37-15, at the half before losing at home. The Anteaters were held to 30% shooting from the field, including 19% in the first half.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:
Loyola Marymount 3, UC Irvine 1--Chad Milling had 13 kills and seven blocks for UC Irvine (1-6, 0-5).
