LOME, Togo — More than 6,000 Ghanaians, mostly women and children, have fled to northern Togo in the last week to escape ethnic fighting, the Red Cross said Friday.
A state of emergency has been in force since Thursday in seven northern districts after ethnic Kokombas rampaged through villages, burning houses and killing and wounding residents.
Togolese television said in a report from the border area on Thursday that at least 15 people had been killed.
Police in Ghana say many have been killed in the bush, and their bodies have not been found.
Fighting began early last week when a Nanumba man killed a Kokomba man in a market row over the price of a guinea fowl.
