COSTA MESA : Death of Infant Ruled an Accident

The death of a 2-month-old girl whose sleeping father rolled over her in bed has been officially ruled an accident, the coroner’s office said Tuesday.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed that Patricia Lorena Uribe died of suffocation caused by “paternal overlay.” Paternal or maternal overlay is the term for injuries occurring when a parent rolls onto a child, a coroner’s investigator said.
The infant was reported injured about 12:25 a.m. Sunday when her mother, Peggy Uribe, 35, arrived home from work and discovered the child not breathing and pinned beneath her 36-year-old husband, Jaime Uribe.
The couple frantically called 911 and a dispatcher instructed them on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The child was first taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, then moved to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange, where she was pronounced dead Monday evening.
