Boeing to Design New Fighter: The Seattle-based aircraft company and two engine makers will design a new fighter plane in an attempt to win a contract to produce the jets for the U.S. Marines and Air Force, Boeing said. Boeing is teamed on the $32-million project with Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce. The work is being done under an agreement announced with the Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is expected to decide in 1996 whether to develop a prototype based on one of the designs, Boeing officials said. If the go-ahead is given, a prototype probably would not fly before 1999, Boeing said. Boeing is to come up with a concept for an advanced short takeoff and vertical landing fighter, to compete with designs by Lockheed and McDonnell Douglas.
