A woman who was accidentally shot in the head last week by her 6-year-old son has died after she was disconnected from a life-support system at the request of her family, authorities said Thursday.
Hyang Ja Jung, 36, who had been in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center, was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon. Her husband, father and son were at her bedside when she died, hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda said.
Just six days before the April 27 shooting, Jung and her son had arrived in Los Angeles from Korea to celebrate her father’s 70th birthday. The father was a security guard at the Koreatown apartment building where he lived. He fell asleep before going to work, detectives said, allowing the boy to pull the gun from his waist belt and accidentally fire one shot. The man had put the gun in his belt to keep it from the boy, detectives said.
Detectives said Thursday that they planned to file a report with the district attorney’s office today. Under the Children’s Firearm Accident Protection Act, an adult can receive up to three years in state prison and a $10,000 fine for keeping a loaded weapon that is accessible to a minor.
