The 27th annual All Sport L.A. Watts Summer Games, the largest high school athletic competition in the nation, begins with preliminary competition Saturday at 24 sites throughout the Los Angeles Basin. Finals begin June 25. Admission is free.
Flag football competition begins Saturday with all games at Compton College. First-round games: Beverly Hills vs. Anaheim Western, 8 a.m.; Palisades vs. Franklin, 8 a.m.; Culver City vs. Manual Arts, 8 a.m.; Hamilton vs. Arcadia, 9 a.m.; Hollywood vs. Verbum Dei, 10 a.m.; Fremont vs. Murphy, 11 a.m. and Inglewood vs. University, 11 a.m.
Saturday’s first-round baseball pairings: Fairfax vs. Redlands, 8 a.m. at Compton College; Palisades vs. Verbum Dei, 9 a.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills; Colton at Westchester High, 10 a.m. and University vs. Rialto, 3 p.m. at Harbor College.
Saturday’s boys’ basketball games: El Segundo at Westchester High, 9 a.m.; South Pasadena at Fairfax High, 9 a.m.; Duarte vs. Hamilton, 10 a.m. at Westchester; Palisades vs. Rancho Cucamonga, 11 a.m. at Westchester; Culver City vs. Alhambra, noon at Inglewood High; Santa Monica vs. Bellflower, 1 p.m. at Fairfax; University vs. Loyola, 1 p.m. at Dorsey High; Venice vs. Pacifica, 2 p.m. at Westchester, and Roosevelt vs. Murphy, 3 p.m. at Fairfax. . . .
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jr., the son of former Laker star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, will continue his basketball career at Valparaiso next season. Abdul-Jabbar, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound forward, averaged 17 points and eight rebounds as a senior at Brentwood High. Abdul-Jabbar chose Valparaiso over Louisiana State where Bill Walton’s son, Adam, decided to attend. . . .
Bob Mandeville will continue to work under Tony Fuller after being named an assistant men’s basketball coach at Pepperdine. Mandeville, 32, worked as a San Diego State assistant for two season under Fuller, who was named the Wave coach May 5.
