World IN BRIEF : FRANCE : Emmanuelli Takes Socialist Party Reins
- Share via
Michel Rocard resigned as head of the French Socialist Party and was replaced by former National Assembly President Henri Emmanuelli, who took over as provisional party chief. Rocard, the party’s likely presidential candidate, resigned after a no-confidence vote by the party’s national council. The move followed the Socialists’ disastrous results in last weekend’s European Parliament elections when they received only 14.4% of the vote, their worst score in decades. Emmanuelli, 49, will head the party until a scheduled congress this fall or until a special convention is called to choose the Socialist candidate for the April, 1995, presidential election.
