Catholic Killed, Shops Firebombed in N. Ireland

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Masked gunmen killed a Catholic businessman while his girlfriend pleaded for mercy at their apartment outside Belfast on Friday, and five shops in the city were firebombed, police said.
The man, 44, was shot at a pro-British housing estate. Police suspect an extremist Protestant group fighting to keep Northern Ireland under British rule.
Three bombs in the main shopping area caused extensive damage. Police suspect the Irish Republican Army, fighting to end British rule.
