PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : In Another Move, Jenkins Signs

The training camp player shuffle continued Friday at Oxnard with the signing of Robert Jenkins, a guard who played with the Rams and UCLA. To make room for Jenkins, safety R.J. Kors, a free agent from Long Beach State, was waived.

In the two weeks they have been in camp, the Raiders have made more than their usual amount of roster moves because of the amount of available veterans created by the 80-man roster limit rule.

“We’re doing things based on the needs on the roster,” Coach Art Shell said. “The moves are dictated by the depth at certain positions. When people go down at this time of the year, you have to move people based on needs of certain positions. But we like to bring in people who have a chance to make the team.”

This was evident Friday as wide receiver Alexander Wright, safety Patrick Bates, fullbacks Derrick Gainer and Randy Jordan, and offensive tackles Bruce Wilkerson and Greg Skrepenak all skipped the afternoon practice.

In their last practice before leaving for Barcelona, where they will play Denver on July 31, the Raiders will hold their annual training camp scrimmage this morning. Shell, who likes to call the scrimmage a controlled practice, said the team will get its first work with game officials and will concentrate on several areas of the kicking game.

“It’s really no big deal,” Shell said of the scrimmage. “We’ll just practice under some game conditions with chains when we move the ball. It’s really just a regular practice.”
