Mervyn LeRoy’s stark 1932 drama, based on a true story about an innocent man sent to a brutal prison only to escape and become a criminal, still retains its raw power. Both the lead actor, Paul Muni (pictured), and the film received Oscar nominations. This was a key movie in establishing Warner Bros. as Hollywood’s most socially conscious--and also liveliest--studio in the ‘30s (Showtime Monday at 2:55 p.m.).
Other four-star films airing this week: Beauty and the Beast Disney, Sunday, 7 p.m.; Monday, 4:30 a.m.
Lives of a Bengal Lancer A&E;, Wednesday, 1 a.m.
Tom Jones Bravo, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, 12:30 a.m.
Oliver Twist Showtime, Thursday, 8 a.m.
Gunga Din AMC, Saturday, 2 and 10 p.m.
The Sting TBS, Saturday, 7:05 p.m.
