Avalon Resort Vote: The Avalon City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a development agreement for a 300-room luxury resort hotel on Descanso Beach that would enable a Phoenix-based builder to secure financing for the project. The city has already approved the plan for the $100 million resort, which would feature restaurants and meeting rooms said Avalon City Manager Robert Clark. The resort is designed to attract visitors year-round, especially for conventions. It is projected to net $25.9 million a year in revenue by its third year of operation, said Rick Williams of The Pointe Group, the Phoenix company that has already built about two dozen resorts and hotels in the western United States. Clark said the resort “would be a huge benefit to the city, both in terms of our tax base and in terms of generating business for the rest of the town,” which is currently served by much smaller hotels.
