Sterling-KnowledgeWare Merger in Question: Since learning that KnowledgeWare Inc. is in worse shape than it had thought, Sterling Software Inc. may scrap its plan to merge with the computer software company owned by former professional football star Fran Tarkenton. Four weeks ago, Dallas-based Sterling agreed to pay $143 million in stock for the Atlanta-based company. It now says it is negotiating a reduced stock-swap offer and is uncertain whether it will proceed with the buyout, which would have created the nation’s 11th-largest software concern.
