13 Traffic Deaths Occur in County Over Weekend

Thirteen people died in traffic accidents in Los Angeles County over the Labor Day weekend, compared to three during the same period last year, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.
Statewide, the number of fatalities declined dramatically, from 68 last year to 38 for the 78-hour period that ended at midnight Monday, said CHP Officer Tito Gomez. He said the figures could change.
In Los Angeles County, 346 motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, compared to 503 last year. Statewide, there were 1,702 such arrests over the weekend, compared to 2,070 last year.
