World IN BRIEF : MEXICO : Opposition Leader Killed in Chiapas

A regional leader of Mexico’s opposition Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) was shot to death in the troubled southern state of Chiapas, government and PRD officials said. Roberto Hernandez Paniagua, the center-left party’s head in the town of Jaltenango de la Paz, was shot several times as he bicycled to a school where he was a teacher. The incident followed several days of unrest in Chiapas, where PRD supporters have blocked highways and taken over government buildings to protest the results of the Aug. 21 state gubernatorial election. The PRD claims the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party was given the victory only because of massive fraud.
