Airlines Slash Autumn Fares Up to 50%: The cuts, which apply to mainly domestic travel between Sept. 21 and Dec. 14, mark the latest in a wave of discounts sweeping the industry as carriers battle for passengers and profits. Tickets must be purchased by Sept. 16. The discounts do not apply to travel immediately surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday. Continental Airlines Inc. launched the latest discounts late Tuesday. AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc., UAL Corp.’s United Airlines, Trans World Airlines Inc. and USAir Group Inc. all matched the Continental discounts.
