LAGUNA BEACH : City Will Consider Skateboard Park

The city is researching the possibility of opening a skateboard park following a Recreation Committee meeting that drew about 30 residents, mostly young skateboarders.

Deputy City Manager Cindy King said no one spoke out at Monday night’s meeting opposing the idea.

“It was a very positive discussion, it really was,” King said Tuesday. “It was obvious to the committee at this particular point that there was a fair amount of interest. But there are lots of questions that remain unanswered.”

Between now and November, proponents and city staff will research issues such as costs, liability, where a skateboard park might be located and what size it would be, King said. Then the committee will reconsider the proposal.

Should the committee ultimately endorse a proposal to open such a park, its recommendation would be forwarded to the City Council for approval.

The idea of creating a skateboard park in Laguna Beach evolved from a youth summit held here last year. It was also suggested at that time that a teen center be created, King said. The teen center proposal is also being explored.
