No. 1 Player Loses in Wheelchair Tennis

IRVINE — David Welch upset top-seeded Laurent Giammartini of France on Friday in the quarterfinals in the men’s Open Division of the U.S. Open of Wheelchair Tennis at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Welch, from Bedford, Tex., defeated Giammartini, 6-4, 6-2. In other matches, 10th-seeded Jim Black of Oceanside upset second-seeded Randy Snow of of Heath, Tex., 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and third-seeded David Hall of Jacksonville, Fla., defeated seventh-seeded Michael Foulkswon of La Jolla, 6-1, 6-2. Fourth-seeded Mick Connell of Australia beat eighth-seeded Scott Douglas of Pelham, Ala., 7-6, 6-3.
In women’s Open Division, top-seeded Chantal Vandierendonck of the Netherlands beat fourth-seeded Daniela DiToro of Australia, 7-6, 6-4. The Netherlands’ Monique Kalkman, seeded No. 2, beat third-seeded Regina Isecke of Germany, 6-2, 6-3.
The Open Division men’s semifinals and women’s final are today.
