Welch Tops Black in Tennis Final

IRVINE — Steve Welch of Bedford, Tex., defeated Jim Black of Oceanside, 6-3, 6-3, to win the U.S. Open of Wheelchair Tennis men’s open singles title Sunday at The Racquet Club of Irvine.
Welch, 22, who in 1992 became the youngest player to win the open title, was seeded fifth, but didn’t lose a set in the tournament. Black, seeded 10th, upset defending champion Randy Snow on Saturday.
In men’s open doubles, the top-seeded team of Snow of Heath, Tex., and Mick Connell, of Australia, defeated No. 2 Michael Foulks of La Jolla and David Hall of Jacksonville, Fla., 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In women’s open doubles, the top-seeded team of Monique Kalkman of the Netherlands and Nancy Olson of Daytona Beach, Fla., defeated No. 2 Daniela DiToro of Austria and Chantel Vandierendonck of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-3. Kalkman also defeated Vandierendonck in the women’s open singles final Saturday.
