Help-Wanted Ads Decline: Reflecting a slowdown in employer demand for new workers after strong gains over the summer, the Conference Board’s help-wanted advertising index dropped to 117 in September from 119 in August. Still, the index is 17 points higher than it was during the same time a year ago. Calculated from a base of 100, the index is derived by measuring the monthly volume of employment advertising in 51 newspapers around the country. It is considered a useful barometer for gauging the local, regional and national supply of jobs. Economist Kenneth Goldstein said the slight drop in the index doesn’t indicate a halt to economic recovery, but rather a typical slowdown from an average of 300,000 new jobs in June and July.
