HONG KONG — A Chinese court sentenced five people, including two firefighters and a Hong Kong businessman, to prison Tuesday in connection with a toy factory fire a year ago that killed 87 workers.
The November, 1993, blaze at the Zhili Handicraft Factory was the third in four months in or near Shenzhen, a Chinese boom town bordering Hong Kong, pointing to neglect of industrial safety as China rushes for economic growth.
The sentences ranged from two to 17 years.
