Keeping Your Christmas Tree Fresh and Safe

Make a fresh cut: Cut off at east one-half inch to open pores clogged by sap.

Put in water: Place tree in a stand that will hold at least one gallon of water. If tree is not going into house soon after purchase, it should be stored in a bucket of warm water in a cool spot away from wind and sun in warm climates and protected from freezing and wind in cold climates.

Water daily: Average tree may consume between a quart and a gallon of water a day. Do not let water drop below the cut end of the trunk.

Mini-lights produce minimum heat: The use of smaller lights reduces the drying effect on the tree. Always turn tree lights off when leaving house or retiring for the night. Do not attempt to repair a worn light set, buy a new set.

Keep away from heat sources: Keep tree away from heating vents, fireplaces, television sets, radiators etc. Do not block a door with the tree.

Remove the tree promptly: After Christmas, before the tree dies, remove it from the house. Never burn any part of the tree in a wood stove or fireplace.
