PETERSBURG, Va. — A fire gutted several rooms in a hospital Saturday night, killing four people.
Authorities did not know what caused the blaze that broke out about 9 p.m. at Southside Regional Medical Center. The fire broke out in a fourth-floor patient’s room. Authorities evacuated the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the six-story building.
A police dispatcher said four people died, including two who were transferred to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, about 25 miles to the north.
Five other people were overcome by smoke, but there was no immediate detail on their condition.
