LOS ANGELES : Wachs Calls for Ban on Armor-Piercing Bullets

Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs called Tuesday for a citywide ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of the armor-piercing Black Rhino bullet.
Wachs also wants the council to ask the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to reject an Alabama munitions company’s application to make and sell the Rhino rounds.
“If anything, these companies should be spending their time and money developing better bulletproof vests,” Wachs said.
The uproar over the bullets from Signature Products Corp. of Huntsville, Ala., last week forced the manufacturer to delay production of the armor-piercing Black Rhino rounds.
Signature Products plans to proceed with work on another bullet, the Rhino-Ammo, which is designed to fragment into hundreds of pieces and shred human flesh.
The council is scheduled to consider Wachs’ motion next week.
