America West Airlines to Cut 10% of Work Force: The Phoenix-based carrier, which employs 11,500, said it plans to eliminate 1,100 jobs to save about $31 million this year in operating costs. The airline also said it will provide remaining non-executive workers with performance awards of up to 25% of their base pay if the company reaches certain profit levels. “Because our niche is the full-service, low-fare market, we must be very careful about costs,” Chairman W.A. Franke said. The airline emerged from federal bankruptcy reorganization on Aug. 25.
