TIBET: The Issue Is Independence edited by Edward Lazar (Parallax Press: $9.50; 89 pp., paperback original). Lhasang Tsering sets the tone for this collection of essays by expatriate writers: “ . . . for my generation, to surrender the running of our country and with it the lives of all future generations to China, is like handing over my children to the very people who killed my parents.” The authors recount the human rights abuses of the Chinese government and mourn the loss of their traditional culture. Ignored by the world for decades, the Tibetan people continue to call for Rangzen (independence) with a passion born of despair.
