GARDEN GROVE — Ocean View overcame early sluggishness and finally put away Garden Grove, 64-45, Saturday in a second-round Division II-AA girls’ basketball playoff game.
The Seahawks (21-7)--who have won a school-record 14 games in a row, the longest active streak in the county--will play former Sunset League rival Marina in a quarterfinal next Saturday.
Sophomore Jennifer Tuiolosega led all scorers with 28 points, including four three-pointers, and was hottest during a stretch that put the game out of reach.
After the Argonauts scored five consecutive points to close the margin to 36-27, Tuiolosega hit consecutive three-pointers in the final two minutes of the third quarter, then added two free throws on the opening possession of the fourth to cap a 10-0 run that put the Hawks up, 46-27.
Becky Fraser added 12 points and 19 rebounds for the winners.
Garden Grove resorted to desperate strategy late. Facing an 18-point deficit with four minutes left, the Argonauts fouled in an attempt to cool Ocean View’s shooting and get the ball back. The plan failed because: The Seahawks hit 16 of 19 free throws in the final quarter; Garden Grove made only two of their first 13 shots in the quarter, and the Argonauts were twice called for intentional fouls.
Garden Grove (15-9) was led by Janine Shaw, who was zero for seven in the first half but finished with 16 points.
