SAN GABRIEL — A Glendale man was killed at his job as a grocery clerk Monday when a stray bullet from a shootout between a robber and a guard hit him, authorities said.
Rudy Reyes, 27, was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. at San Gabriel Valley Community Hospital, said Deputy Rich Erickson of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
Reyes was working at a San Gabriel Lucky grocery store at 9:25 a.m. when a gunman confronted an armored car guard as he was about to make a routine cash delivery to the store, Erickson said.
The gunman pulled a semiautomatic weapon and shot at the guard, who returned fire with his handgun. Bullets struck Reyes as he stood with other store employees, Erickson said.
Investigators believe the robber, who fled empty-handed, was also wounded by gunfire, Erickson said.
Reyes had been employed at the store for several months, he said.
