ANGELS : Added Bonus--Seeing Ripken Break Record

TEMPE, Ariz. — The revised Angel schedule has only three changes, but there is one added bonus--barring rainouts, the Angels will be in Baltimore when Oriole shortstop Cal Ripken ties and breaks Lou Gehrig’s record of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.
Ripken is scheduled to tie the mark on Sept. 5 and break it on Sept. 6.
“I’d pay to get in there,” Angel shortstop Gary DiSarcina said. “Everyone who understands what it’s like to play a number of games in a row can appreciate what he’s going to do. It doesn’t just take a toll on your body, it takes a toll on your mind. But he’s done it for 13 years. It’s incredible.”
The Angels will open at home against the Detroit Tigers April 26, but the starting time has not been determined. After an off-day, they’ll travel to Toronto for a four-game series.
Two 7 p.m. home games have been added to the schedule--July 3 against Toronto and Aug. 17 against Boston--and one road game, Sept. 27 at Seattle, has been dropped, giving the Angels a 144-game schedule.
The Angels’ spring training schedule:
April 13--Milwaukee, 14--at Colorado (in Tucson), 15--at San Francisco (in Scottsdale), 16--Oakland, 17--Seattle, 18--at Chicago (in Mesa), 19--at San Diego (in Peoria), 20--Oakland, 22--at San Diego (Jack Murphy Stadium, 7 p.m.), 23--at San Diego (1 p.m.), 24--San Diego (Anaheim Stadium, 7 p.m.), 25--San Diego (1 p.m.).

There were two notable no-shows Wednesday, designated hitter Chili Davis, who is negotiating a new contract, and relief pitcher Lee Smith, who signed a two-year, $4-million deal over the winter.
Center fielder Chad Curtis has been in Florida helping his brother coach a high school team and is expected today or Friday. Pitcher Julio Valera and outfielder Marquis Riley did not report, and Luis Raven, a Venezuela resident who is awaiting a visa, is expected next week.
Manager Marcel Lachemann said he would not be concerned about any of the absences until Friday, the mandatory reporting date for players. Wednesday was a voluntary date.
Tim Mead, Angel assistant general manager, said Davis was a day late for camp last season. Adam Katz, an agent representing Davis, indicated that the designated hitter, who lives in Scottsdale, would be in camp by Friday but would not comment on negotiations.
Notes
Pitcher Phil Leftwich, who underwent shoulder surgery a month ago, has been rehabilitating his arm but won’t be able to throw for another two weeks. He’ll likely make a few minor league starts before being considered for the Angel pitching staff. . . . Pitcher Mark Langston, the Angels’ union representative during the 7 1/2-month strike, said he will not seek reelection for another two-year term. “It was a very interesting experience and I’m glad I did it--it opened my eyes to a lot of things,” Langston said. “But I don’t think I want to do it again.”
