Re the “Triple Threats” entry in the Oscar Bits column (March 26):
In addition to the six actors named as having appeared in three Oscar-winning best pictures (Cazale, Gable, Hoffman, Keaton, MacLaine, Streep), there are several others: Ward Bond, Donald Crisp Harry Davenport, Hugh Griffith, Jack Hawkins, Talia Shire and, if his Oscar as best director is included, Robert Redford.

Oscar Bits stated that only two films have won the best picture honor without the director being nominated: “Grand Hotel” (1931-32) and “Driving Miss Daisy” (1989).
Wrong. The count is three, not two. William Wellman, who helmed “Wings”--the very first best picture winner (1927-28)--was completely shut out.
