PUMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE by John Margolies (Bulfinch/Little, Brown: $8.95; 32 pp., paperback original). The 30 postcards in this small book celebrate American gas stations of an earlier era, before they became mini-grocery stores and video rental outlets. The architecture of these stations is eclectic, to say the least. There are service stations shaped like coffeepots, windmills, tepees, adobes and one singularly weird amalgam of chinoiserie and Dutch styles. The roving heros of “Route 66” never pulled into that one.
