DANA POINT : Headlands Ecology Workshops Scheduled
- Share via
The Dana Point Headlands Conservancy will hold a series of public workshops beginning Saturday on the future of the environmentally sensitive area.
Participants include the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, Dana Point United, the Orange County Marine Institute and the Committee to Save the Headlands, as well as one of the landowners, M.H. Sherman Co.
Representatives from those and other organizations will conduct panel discussions on the issue, with an arbitrator from the conservancy presiding over the meetings. Public comments are encouraged.
The other owner of the Headlands is Chandis Securities Co., a firm that oversees the financial holdings of the Chandler family. Chandis Securities is a major stockholder in Times Mirror Co., publisher of the Los Angeles Times.
The owners had proposed a $500-million luxury resort for the property, and the City Council approved the plan in April, 1994. But residents launched a petition campaign calling for a vote on the development, then in November handily approved measures to block construction of the resort.
Derith Madden, president of the conservancy, said that seven workshops have been tentatively planned over the next few months. Specific dates and times will be set at the first meeting, Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Dana Niguel Library, 33841 Niguel Road.
