In the summer of 1924, the dance floors were packed on Sundays in Newport Beach.
The business boom was born when Long Beach, a popular destination, enacted “blue laws” prohibiting dances on Sundays. Dedicated dancers seeking a different venue discovered the Balboa Pavilion.
The pavilion was managed by J. P. Greeley, later to become the first county schools superintendent.
