From Ridiculous to the Sublime

Saturday, Aug. 19, I witnessed a sorry spectacle that added to my fears that Western Civilization is in serious decline. The return of a fallen hero. All around him the celebrities were announced as if they were royalty. Enter the sacrificial water buffalo. Wham, bam and it’s over. Don King and Mike Tyson are back on the road to further fame and fortunes.
Sunday, Aug. 20, I read an article by Chris Dufresne that gave me hope for our decaying society. It was a story about a man with no fame or fortune but character. John Zinda was a man of integrity, and his story was touching and inspiring. The world of sports today is dominated by greedy, swaggering buffoons. I thank you for giving space to a story about a person whose values and principles were not focused on fame and riches but on something finer. John Zinda’s story reminded me of where my love for sports comes from.
